The lsusb listing shows that your dongle is supported by the option driver in kernel 3.13 which Ubuntu 14.04 is built on.

The problem is most likely a usb controller driver error, can you please test on a USB 2.0 port or with a USB 2.0 hub connected between dongle and your computers USB 3.0 port.

The option driver could not bind because it could not read the attributes from the dongle, the same error that ModemManager complains about:
"Jul 3 23:44:32 ModemManager[812]: <warn> (ttyUSB0): port attributes not fully set"
