I'd like to see this too. It's a bit silly to require an .iso file matching the running system when the very same files are available under /cdrom. (Keep the option to install different versions of Ubuntu, of course, and do require an .iso file then.)
Usb-creator should probably verify MD5 sums in this case, as I've definitely seen minor file corruption (which can lead to boot failures) with some flash drives. But for ~700MB of freed-up space, it's worth it.
