I saw this happen today in 12.10. Started making a live usb with creator, and the startup disk creator window just disappeared completely. However there was still disk activity on my usb drive and it finished the install.

I tried to get the 12.04 ubuntu server image on a pendrive, which failed as per the bug description. I used 12.10 on my laptop. On the same laptop I booted up a VM running 12.04 desktop as live CD and the SDC from there successfully installed the same image on the same pendrive.

as a workaround, for me it was sufficient to manually run
grub-install --root-directory /media/mountpoint-of-usb-drive /dev/dev-of-usb-drive

What a nice surprise in full Raring-testing...
As a workaround, unetbootin (albeit with a cryptic, ugly interface) will work. But for newbies it will be a problem --- let's hope they will use windows to prepare the USB stick.
