Bug Description

Something happened recently on my Toshiba Satellite A200 laptop running amd64 Maverick fully updated, and now Ubuntu thinks I'm on a desktop computer. I'm using the latest kernel in the repos, 2.6.35-16-generic.

The laptop has had no problems with the battery not being recognized before on previous version of Ubuntu. I haven't had time to do a fresh install to check if it's still present then.

This is what seems to be missing:

 - No "on battery" tab in Power Management (http://twitpic.com/2fkm53)
 - Battery icon will no longer display in the panel at all
 - No notifications related to battery whenever I unplug or plug in the power cord
 - No notifications anymore when I change the brightness using Fn + F6 / F7
 - Screen doesn't automatically dim when on battery

Sorry if this is a duplicate, and sorry I didn't know which package to file it under.

I reinstalled acpi-support and pm-utils, and when reinstalling acpi-support I got this:

Setting up acpi-support (0.137) ...
update-rc.d: warning: /etc/init.d/acpi-support missing LSB information
update-rc.d: see <http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts>

Also, it's worth nothing that my battery shows up under /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0 with the following files:

alarm
info
state

The info and state files change when I unplug the AC power, so Ubuntu is recognizing the battery state changes, but not actually doing anything about it regarding the desktop.

affects: ubuntu → acpi-support (Ubuntu)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve Ubuntu.

acpi-support is not involved in relaying this information to the desktop. Reassigning to upower.

affects: acpi-support (Ubuntu) → upower (Ubuntu)
