Oops, sorry for letting this expire. I was going to report this to upstream upower when I came across this bug report: <https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32230>

Would you mind trying to use acpi_listen[1] to see if it detects the lid open event as well as the lid closed? Thanks, and sorry again for the delay.
