i have no idea if the fix works out of the box on a new/clean Karmic
install. My system is up to date, but i had to use stacktracer's tip to
enable the hibernate in the shutdown menu.

sudo apt-get install devicekit-power
and then edit:
/usr/share/ polkit- 1/actions/ org.freedesktop .devicekit. power.policy
