Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-notifier

After the patches submitted here:

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gnome-python-extras/+bug/40444

the update-notifier icon's background is in most cases transparent. However, in some cases the original grey background is shown. Could it be that some parts of the code need further patching?

Steps to reproduce (note there have to be some upgradable packages in the repos for this to work, otherwise the notifier's icon will not be shown):

1. Open Synaptic, enter your password when prompted and hit the reload button. See that there are some upgradable packages.

2. Do not upgrade any packages, simply exit Synaptic.

3. After a few seconds, the upgrade-notifier icon will pop up in the notification area. Its background is grey instead of the expected transparency.

Note that in order to see this, the panel's background colour must be either transparent or other than the default gnome grey.

See the attachment for a screenshot.

This screenshot shows the update-notifier icon's background in the notification area not being transparent.

Thanks for your bugreport. I was not able to reproduce this with the latest version of update-notifier.

Yes, I cannot reproduce on my laptop with the latest version, either.

I think I would leave it open until I can test this again on the machine I was using when I observed this.

If I cannot reproduce it again there and no-one else can confirm this, I think this bug could be closed.

Thanks

I cannot describe a step-by-step way to reproduce this bug, but in the last few weeks it keeps appearing nearly every time there are software updates available.

That happens on both my Dapper and Edgy systems.

This bug has been marked as 'Needs Info' for quite a while now.

Other than reporting that this is happening and attaching screenshots, is there a way we can provide more info? what info is required?

I recall this being solved in Dapper, but it is back in Edgy.

Can someone check this out?

I was thinking that it could be something regarding 3rd party reps, but just had the xorg security upgrade with the icon being transparent, then added a 3rd party rep with gaim beta 4 to check if the icon differed, but it didn't.

I'd mark this as solved in Edgy unless someone with Edgy can confirm it happening.

Not yet resolved in Edgy, I still have this problem.

I wouldn't just yet. This is still happening in Edgy, and at least on my case I doubt it has to do with third party repos.

Still happens on current feisty. See attached screenshot

Could this have something to do with the notification area redrawing? I've seen transparent icons get a background for a couple of seconds when doing something CPU intensive.

One icon I get almost with this issue is the printer one.

Update notification sometimes is transparent, others isn't.

Just forced a refresh of the notification area by changing theme while having there a non transparent icon (the update one also) and it became transparent, even with the same theme.

even opening the theme properties made the icon transparent again.

Appears to be fixed in Feisty as of 04/04/07, anyone can confirm otherwise?

I'm seeing it as we speak (feisty current as of 2007-04-06). It's on and off. Sometimes it's transparent, sometimes it isn't. Not a really big deal for me, but it's a glitch.

Happens too with Gutsy up-to-date.

Michael, can I provide any info in order to fix this issue?

I saw it again happening on Feisty.

I do not know whether it is related to this or not, but IIRC I only saw it happening after I had enabled some repositories through the software-properties-gtk tool (I think I added the backports repositories).

I must also say that the bug seems to appear randomly. The icon's background is most of the time transparent.

I get a non-transparent update icon in the latest Gutsy, gnome.
Are there some people who never get this problem?
Is there a way to capture the icon (determine the file) when it's present?

I can confirm this bug is still present in Feisty as well - this is with a completely Vanilla install with no 3rd party repos selected and no changes to the theme except to replace the background image and set the top panel bar to be partially transparent.

Thanks for your bugreport.

The current version of update-notifier in gutsy uses a GtkStatusIcon now instead of the old EggTrayIcon. This means that this problem should be fixed now. Please reopen if you still experience it with gutsy.

thanks,
 Michael
