Bug Description

If I do 'sudo apt-get update', the icon appear in the notification area. Thus, I
suppose there's a hook somewhere...
Now, if I do 'sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade', the icon doesn't disappear. It
should :-)

Thanks for your bugreport.

What version do you use? I uploaded a 0.37.3 today that improves the detection
of changes a lot.
It should notice dist-upgrades in less than 1 minute.

thanks,
 Michael

what's the output of /var/lib/update-manager/apt-check?
What's the tooltip message on the icon?

I think you found the problem :-)
Missing dependency?

Sorry, wrong path :/
the correct one is: "/usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check"

What does the tooltip of the icon show?

Tooltip is: "There are 31 updates available!"
And that's not true.

Thanks! It looks like update-notifier didn't detected the upgrade for some
reason. Does
the file /var/lib/update-notifier/dpkg-run-stamp has about the time you did the
upgrade?
Do you have fam (or gamin) runing? If you do a "apt-get update", do
update-notifier detect
that and update it's status (if no updates are available it should just go away)?

thanks,
 Michael

vuntz@latronche ~/>ls -l /var/lib/update-notifier/dpkg-run-stamp
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2005-01-12 17:52 /var/lib/update-notifier/dpkg-run-stamp
I did the upgrade at that time, yes.

I've gamin. But if you're using gamin to monitor
/var/lib/update-notifier/dpkg-run-stamp, it's normal it doesn't work. See bug #11624

I did "apt-get update". There's 9 updates according to dist-upgrade. The tooltip
doesn't change (I've been waiting more than 2 minutes).
I did "apt-get update" before and there was no updates at that time. The icon
did not disappear.

I just checked: the tooltip is now correct. I should have waited more than 5
minutes :-)
I'll dist-upgrade and see if the tooltip is updated when there's no update.

Small update: tooltip is still here and wrong, telling me there are 9 updates.

In your last comment you said it's went away? Is this really version 0.37.3
runing? It was
updated today (I think, might be yesterday). So it might be that 0.37.2 was
started with your
session and you upgraded to 0.37.3 then? Keep me updated if it gets better/worse
after you
relogined into gnome (it's fine if your next relogin is tomorrow, I'll go to bed
now :)

thanks!
