I haven't seen this before:

Setting up grub-pc (1.99-17ubuntu1) ...^M
Removing update-grub hooks from /etc/kernel-img.conf in favour of^M
/etc/kernel/ hooks.^M
Replacing config file /etc/default/grub with new version^M
Generating grub.cfg ...^M
