Followed your instructions - when I ran the Update Manager for the first
time I did not get the 'Failed to download repository' message and the
update proceeded normally. When I looked in the Other Software entries
tab I could see the two Pidgin entries were still there but un-checked.
I cannot now remember if at any point I had tried de-selecting them
using the check mark rather than just trying a removal. However
following a re-boot the entries are back checked and I see the 'Failed
to download repository' message again. Those little buggers just won't
go away. BTW - I can't see it would make any difference but I am running
the GNOME 2 shell on 11.10.

My new Kindle eBook on the acoustic guitar is available from Amazon - GUITAR Mechanics: http://www.amazon.co.uk/GUITAR-Mechanics-ebook/dp/B005GEXV0G/
You don't need a Kindle to buy or read the book - Amazon provide free reader apps (download from right of book page) for most PCs, tablets and smartphones.
