You mean just open the terminal and type that exact character string in, then press enter, correct? I did that and it didn't seem to do much. I then tried to open the update manager, and this time got the following error message (similar but slightly different from the first one; "restricted" vs "main"):

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_restricted_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
