I am getting the same problem , however in my case when I press on the CHECK button, the application hangs and I cannot stop it not even with Control C from the terminal.
I tried it from both Gnome3 and Gnome Classic sessions.
Note: I just install Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric 64Bit

Here is the error message:

When I press CONTROL C I Get:
^CTraceback (most recent call last): python2. 7/dist- packages/ UpdateManager/ MetaReleaseGObj ect.py" , line 42, in check
File "/usr/lib/
def check(self):
KeyboardInterrupt
But has no effect!!!
As a work around, I am using apt-get utility from the terminal.
I hope it will be fixed soon.
Thanks
