I saw the EdgyUpdate page, and, not knowing there were problems did
sudo update-manager -c
and then clicked on 'upgrade to 6.10'

Took quite a while, but succeeded -- no noticeable problems.
(This was on a Digital HiNote laptop with 96MB memory)

Just lucky, I guess...
