I am a 0day convert to the Linux world, and ran into this problem yesterday. Installing via Wubi download most recent version, 64 bit on all new/recent hardware. I also ran into many other problems - installing ATI driver (I know, not supported) would not work, Firefox acted real funny, Software manager lagging/not functioning properly, and another random crash I cannot remember (python something?)...

Anyhow, I tried a few different install methods, and found one that worked for me, to freshly install without this problem (or any of the other ones) occurring, and now everything is running perfectly.

All I did was disconnect my internet, burn the 11.10 amd64 ISO to a DVD, and "Install Inside Windows" (which is crucial to my conversion plan right now). This seems to end up doing most of the installation after the reboot (still not connected to internet). After getting to desktop, I rebooted again to be sure (My MS habits are going to take some time to change), and then ran update manager, which seemed to download way more data than the previous install and subsequent terminal update methods (almost 100 MB more after adding all totals). No crashing, all good and very fast/responsive.

Anyhow, I don't know if this is helpful, but since everything works perfect for me now I wanted to give back to the community since that is how I understand things get done around here. This is how I solved the problem for me (and many other unexpected ones I could only feel had to be related somehow but wouldn't know where to look yet).

If this post was not useful, I am open to criticism on where to go/what to read to get more up to speed. Similarly, I'd be happy to recreate the original error for further testing/feedback if needed, but still kinda clueless to this side of things. Trying to learn quickly.

Cheers,
Jason
