Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Hi,

When using "update-notifier-kde -d" to upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic beta, the update app pops up an error box after having downloaded all packages, and before (I think) the actual upgrade process -- see update-manager-error.png. Apport doesn't seem to generate a valid bug report, so I used ubuntu-bug...

On the command line:

me@mybox:~$ update-notifier-kde -d
extracting 'karmic.tar.gz'
authenticate 'karmic.tar.gz' against 'karmic.tar.gz.gpg'
/var/lib/python-support/python2.6/dbus/connection.py:242: DeprecationWarning: object.__init__() takes no parameters
  super(Connection, self).__init__(*args, **kwargs)

adept_manager: no process killed
adept_updater: no process killed
 * Starting automatic crash report generation: apport
   ...done.

Thanks for your bugreport.

Cold you please run "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y --simulate" and attach the output?

The error message is very non-descriptive, once we figured out what is wrong, we need to improve that as well.

Was there anything displayed in the "show terminal" expander when this happend?

I am getting this same error. There is nothing in "show terminal" when it happens. Running sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y --simulate reports an error:

petur@skttrbrain:~/tmp$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y --simulate > dist-upgrade-simulate.log
[sudo] password for petur:
E: Conf Broken libc-bin
E: Couldn't configure pre-depend openoffice.org-core for openoffice.org-filter-binfilter, probably a dependency cycle.

I get the same error on sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y --simulate (attaching full output). "Show terminal" is disabled before the error, and blocked by the dialog afterwards. Clicking close, well, closes the whole application.

Many thanks for the updates.

Could you please attach the file /var/lib/dpkg/status so that I can try to reproduce the issue? This is most likely a dup of #442651 but I was not able to reproduce this one yet.

The workaround in #442651 (removing openoffice.org-filter-binfilter) allows the install to continue, so this seems to be related.

The openoffice.org-filter-binfilter workaround also works for me -- I have upgraded to karmic.

This is fixed now with the new openoffice.org in the archive. Many thanks for the provided dpkg status files.
