Bug Description
Binary package hint: update-manager
Running Hardy, upgraded from Gutsy when Gutsy was released.
Update Manager stalls as it is unable to invoke the password request.
Synaptics Package Manager won't start for the same reason.
No error messages are displayed.
This problem wasn't there before or after the upgrade; then began to occur sporadically - stopping and restarting Update Manager two or three times got it to work; then the problem settled in for the duration and was no longer fixed by stopping and restarting.
Having trolled the forums trying to resolve these problems, I've found that many people are having the same trouble and I've found the following:
In trying several commands suggested elsewhere; sudo aptitude update, sudo aptitude upgrade, sudo apt-get install -f, and sudo apt-get clean; I noted a response: unable to resolve host 'hostname', indicating an authentication problem.
Another post suggested editing lines in the /etc/hosts file from:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 hostname.domain
to
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 hostname
This change to the /etc/hosts file resolved the problem.
The "bug" would therefore appear to involve an incorrect hostname in the hosts file and/or the authentication process rather than the Administrative Applications themselves.
Please install the libgksu version from hardy-updates, that should fix this problem.
