Binary package hint: update-manager
I initially tried upgrading from feisty to gutsy (running amd64) the easy way via the update notifier, which failed without any useful error messages. I then tried it again from the command line via aptitude hoping to get some more useful information, but it only got me:

again, without really telling me much. Poking around in /usr/share/update-manager similarly didn't turn up anything of note (I can attach all the files if this will help). There was a reported bug with evms for upgrades in a related bug report, but uninstalling this had no effect.
Any ideas what is going on?

As the title says: if a package is kept, the version upgrade process (both through the update-manager gui and from do-release-upgrade) fails without providing the user with any useful explanation...
Instead, you should get something like:
"Package xyz is kept back on your system, which makes a version upgrade impossible. Please unlock this package and start the upgrade process again." |

This may have something to do with packages you have installed from feisty-backports. I am confirming this for you. I did notice this your logs - "2008-02-04 11:47:28,544 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.'"
