I'm not knowledgable enough to answer your question re: backend. Regardless, the workaround has worked. I no longer get the error condition when I invoke the update manager.
So: updating with Update Manager didn't work, but the workaround using
'Mark all upgrades' in Synaptic did.
Aren't they both using the same backend?!
