When update-manager fails, no way to cancel/recover

During todays update of the kernel, update manager just stopped. I have no way to cancel the update because cancel is greyed out, and there's no close button. See screenshot..

It's now 13:19 and it's been wedged for some time:-

This is not a duplicate 1161243. I am reporting that update manager has no way to be cancelled when an update fails. I am not reporting the specific update failure. It's happened again today in a different way. See screenshot.
