Bug Description

When I try to run update manager, I get the following message:

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.'

Please note that I'm running ubuntu 10.04 and simply checking for udpdates, not trying to upgrade to more recent release. When I try to determine the package version via 'apt-cache policy pkgname', I get:

Unable to locate package pkgname

OK. I've done as you requested. The output for 'sudo apt-get -f install'
follows:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 864 not upgraded.

That's interesting. There seems to be no problems with current packages. Do you have any third party repositories enabled in your system? There might be a package from a PPA missing some of its dependencies and Update Manager refuses to update the package causing the entire upgrade to fail.

Could you also paste the output from command 'sudo apt-get upgrade' to this bug? Hopefully that gives us some information about the package causing the issues...

Unless my memory is totally failing me, or I've managed to inadvertently
install a program, there should be no third party repositories. Of course,
I have only a vague notion of what third party repositories are.

Weird. No apparent errors there either. I have no idea what could be causing this.

You could try running 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' as it's better at handling dependency errors. But be careful, it can delete/install packages so make sure nothing important gets deleted. If you see a long list of packages being deleted or installed, you should abort the procedure just to stay on the safe side.

I think you might find this useful. The ouput for 'sudo apt-get
dist-upgrade' follows:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Failed
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  gnome-icon-theme-symbolic: Breaks: gnome-power-manager (< 3.2) but
2.30.0-0ubuntu1.1 is to be installed
  isc-dhcp-client: Breaks: network-manager (< 0.8.2~rc1) but 0.8-0ubuntu3.3
is to be installed
  libglib2.0-0: Breaks: gnome-control-center (< 1:3) but 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu2
is to be installed
nautilus: Breaks: gnome-bluetooth (< 3.0) but 2.30.0-0ubuntu3 is to be
installed
  nautilus-sendto: Breaks: gnome-bluetooth (< 3.0) but 2.30.0-0ubuntu3 is
to be installed
ppp: Breaks: network-manager (<= 0.8.0.999-1) but 0.8-0ubuntu3.3 is to be
installed
       Breaks: network-manager-pptp (<= 0.8.0.999-1) but 0.8-0ubuntu3 is to
be installed
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused
by held packages.

That's odd. For example, there's no gnome-icon-theme-symbolic in Ubuntu 10.04 archives at all. And those packages in Lucid shouldn't break on those mentioned in the error messages.

If you're sure you haven't installed any third party packages (please check whether there's something mentioned in Software Properties -> Other Software list), there's nothing else I could think of. Let's hope someone else has some idea what's going on here...

Sorry. That must have been added in later version of Software Properties (it's been a while since I last used Ubuntu 10.04).
