Sebastien: yes, GNOME=gnome-shell. The three desktops I listed above are the names of the login menu options.
unity-2d is currently broken in our modified Precise distribution so I haven't been able to test with it.
The problem is not isolated to Unity. The new gnome-shell desktop with all of the effects turned on doesn't run Chrome properly either. The first thing that should be investigated, in conjunction with NVIDIA, is Compiz' interaction with OpenGL applications and support for the GLX swap interval.
