@Kenneth: thanks for the testing, I've some questions though, when you say "GNOME", is that a gnome-shell session? "GNOME classic" runs compiz right (where the "no effects" one doesn't)?
So to summarize:
- it doesn't work under unity (and GNOME = gnome-shell?)
- it works under GNOME classic with compiz with a slower framerate
- it works full speed when no compositor is used
that would suggest the issue there is with unity itself rather than compiz? did you try under unity-2d?
