I am not sure as to whether Unity 5.8 is to blame for this. but as of yesterdat, Mar 25, after upgrading packages (Unity 5.8) I cannot get past the login screen.

Lightdm fires up nicely, but when I enter the password, either the screen freezes to Lightdm's screen or everything disappears and you are left with a background in the screen and nothing else.

I am reporting this using linux recovery mode with low graphics activated for 1 session.

Note that, as far as I can remember, lightdm and unity-greeter were upgraded before upgrading the Unity 5.8 packages, and everything worked fine.
