1. I started gnome-terminal from unity panel.
2. I closed gnome-terminal
3. I started gnome-terminal from unity panel.
4. I closed gnome-terminal
5. I started gnome-terminal from unity panel.
6. I closed gnome-terminal
There was three or four icons for gnome-terminal at panel (despite only one process gnome-terminal running in the system) after all.
Then something magic happens and three "fantom" icons disappeared^W became invisible, but functional yet.
Then I started gnome-system-monitor and four icons for system monitor appears simultaneously (yes, for only one process gnome-system-monitor, see screenshot).
