Unity conflicts with Wine

Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit.

When I use Wine in Unity, some programs in Wine malfunction. If I logout of Unity and login to Ubuntu Classic "no effects", the problems disappear. I've also seen this same problem with Unity and Wine occur in Ubuntu version 11.10 (also 64-bit).

I discovered this bug when playing a game called "Ballistic" in Wine:

Try playing it in Wine under Unity, then logout and try it with Ubuntu classic "no effects" and compare results.

Note that I'm using the latest release of Wine.

Wine and Unity conflict - is there any chance this will be fixed before Precise is released?

This problem still exists in Ubuntu 12.04 and Unity when you use Wine to run a Windows program in fullscreen as well. After using Wine in fullscreen, the title bars of every application were missing and going into fullscreen again made the Unity launcher appear in fullscreen!

What exactly do you mean 'malfunction'? Do the programs not work at all? Do they crash? Are there graphical glitches? A detailed explanation would be very helpful.

There are graphical glitches when running Wine/Windows programs under Unity. The behaviour in unpredictable. I've seen the Unity launcher appear in fullscreen, I've seen title bars of windows go missing. On another computer, a Windows game running under Wine - in Unity - would run much slower compared to running that same game in GNOME.

There are basically 2 problems with Unity and Wine. 1) Graphical glitches occur. 2) Wine runs slower in Unity.

None of these problems occur when running the Windows programs in Wine - on the same computer - under GNOME.
