Dario Bertini (berdario) wrote : super-shortcuts are slow to use

Binary package hint: unity

Alt+tab is usable without having to wait for the popup to show up: you can hit it and you know that'll you come back quickly to the previous window you were using; but if, on the other hand, you realize that the previous is not the wanted one, you can (instead of releasing the alt+tab) continue "tabbing" to reach the desired window.
Unity super-shortcuts on the other hand are slower/less intuitive to use:

Lets assume that we have firefox as 3rd launcher, evolution at 4th, and empathy as 5th...

I'm using firefox right, now, and i want to check who's online in empathy, but i'm writing in this text box; to avoid reaching for the mouse, i want to hit the shortcut...
Unfortunately i can't istantly remember the position number of empathy, and i may erroneously assume it's the 4th...

I hit super+4, this brings me to evolution, i realize the error, and i try, without releasing super, to press 5 to correct the mistake, but this doesn't accomplish anything: i have to release super, press it again and then press 5.

There are also other use cases: for example (contrary to the standard gnome alt+tab popup now used in unity) in compiz is possible to have the target windows focused, before releasing the alt button.
This lets the user to hit alt+tab to check the content of another window (like the list of online contacts in empathy), decide he doesn't really wants to use empathy right now, and without releasing "alt", tab (or shift+tab) away to another window. Such feats are impossible to obtain right now in unity.
