Next time, as superuser:

p3@T420s:~$ sudo initctl restart unity7
[sudo] password for p3:
initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused

No menus whatsoever. So, what to do?
