Can you please open another bug (like "unity crashes in unity::UnityScreen::paintDisplay", using ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_compiz.1000.crash)?

It would also be nice, if you could (from gdb), do:
  print gpu_device
  print *gpu_device
  print gpu_device->backup_texture0_
  print *(gpu_device->backup_texture0_)
  print gpu_device->backup_texture0_->_NumMipLevel
  print gpu_device->backup_texture0_->_SurfaceArray
