My media keys were already set to default, so the solution from comment #4 didn't work for me. What salved the problem for me was adding the official gnome3 ppa and upgrading gnome:

~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
~$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

After reboot everything worked. Hope this helps!
