I had issues with unity, gnome-session-fallback and cinnamon (all are gnome3 based). Lubuntu (LXDE) worked fine as my fallback session. I didn't try for too long. I simply gave up and fell back to my 12.04 installation. The interim releases aren't supposed to be as stable as the LTS. No one took notice of this bug, but now that you have confirmed it... maybe it will get some notice?
