Modifier+Alt+Backspace has already been used to kill the x server. For me modifier is Ctrl and Alt is is window action key not [super]. You can check this gnome-tweak-tool -> windows.

That's why it (Alt+Backspace combination) probably doesn't work with or without modifier. Other custom shortcuts works after log-out/log-in which is a bug in unity-settings-daemon.
