William, I have a few thoughts on the impossibility of keyboard input. I remembered that after upgrading to 13.10 this bug was fixed by removing or restart ibus. But in 14.04 removing ibus will remove many other packages. For a similar bug has already been said here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/+bug/481656
