Similar problems here, running an eeePC 1005ha. At the moment I'm stuck running the default programs (clicking on these works OK). Trying the ubuntu icon in the upper-left corner brings up the search bar and a list of application categories, but clicking on any of these, or typing anything into the search bar, causes the screen to flicker and reset (behaviour similar to doing compiz --replace or metacity --replace). The same happens if I click on the applications icon on the left-hand side.
At the moment this completely breaks things for me: aside from firefox I don't use any of the default 'favourite' applications and I can't access any of the others. (Correction: I managed to get a terminal window open and I can now check my email by running thunderbird from the terminal. The downside is that while running from the terminal, there's no icon that appears on the left-hand bar, so I can't pin it to the bar.)
