Alas, that's it... I *am not* using a default wallpaper. There used to be a third-party app to set the background to whatever someone wanted, but that was--AFAIK--discontinued when it was reported unity-greeter would obey backgrounds. Any ideas when this bug will be resolved; shouldn't it be relative easy?
