Same thing here upon booting. "Light Display Manager" is not offered as an option when switching users though.

This only occurred on the first reboot after dist-upgrade. After a second reboot "Light Display Manager" do not appear as an option anymore.

Also seeing this user at the login screen, upgraded from 13.04. Rebooted, but it's still there...
If I click "switch user" after first logging in, the "Light Display Manager user disappears.

But its back after a reboot. :P

Just did an upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 on 17 October 2013. "Light Display Manager" was offered as a login option, but I could still log into my other user accounts and get work done. The minimum-uid line in my /etc/lightdm/users.conf file was set to 500, and the uid of the "lightdm" user was properly set as less than 500. My /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf file had no special instructions to make that user appear on the login screen. Adding "lightdm" to the "hidden-users" line in my /etc/lightdm/users.conf file corrected the problem for now.

I just noticed that, for some reason, the user has disappeared from the list. Possibly coming form one of the updates.

I can confirm this bug is gone with todays round of updates. I don't know which one caused the fix but I'll attach a list of the updated packages and their versions.

After I updated from 13.04 to 13.10, "Light Display Manager" user appears in login screen. I have added "lightdm" to hidden users (in /etc/lightdm/users.conf) but it is still appears in the login screen.

Appears for me both after an upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 and on a fresh 13.10 install (although I do have a seperate partition for the /home directory which was not formatted during the fresh install)

It's displayed after a reboot or an initial start up only for one time, when tried to relogin it disappears.

I just discovered another aspect of this bug. If there are 3 users on your system: A, Light display manager and Z. If A is selected by default at the login screen then clicking on Z does nothing. First you have to click on LDM and only then you can click on user Z.

I noticed today something that didn't caych my eye before.

The login option that is always default for me is my user session but it first show up 'Light Display Manager' and then quickly switches. My user session doesn't have then the Ubuntu logo which is used for switching between diferrent DE's. I have to cycle to the 'Light Display Manager' and back to my user to get this option.

I had this issue when I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10. After login, I noticed that the my shutdown option didn't do anything, although I would get a prompt upon pressing the power button. Anyway, I performed a clean install of 13.10 (home is on a seperate partition and was left intact) and the problem went way. My shutdown option in Unity was back again and all was good... Until today, the Light Display Manager login came back. I applied the work around of adding lightdm to the hidden user with no effect. I read Mateusz's post (#22) and can confirm that I am experiencing the same issue. That last thing I installed was openjdk-7-doc yesterday. Strange...

fyi / i have 3 different systems and 3 different outcomes.

- new install 13.10 on new machine, no issue

- clean upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 where adding lightdm to hidden-users solved the problem

- bad upgrade 13.04 t 13.10 where 13.10 had to be re-installed but /home was changed to old raid drive.
in this instance, adding lightdm to hidden-users only solves after a logout and coming back to the login screen. the initial after boot screen still shows the Light Display Manager user.
