Same setup here: syncing an ext3 fs to a vfat USB disk on Gutsy.

Changing the PRF file actually solves the problem, but a more generic problem remains. Gnome-mount should mount the VFAT volumes with the "quiet" option by default, to avoid errors when trying to set Unix-like permissions.
