Hi.
With Ubuntu 7.10 and ultrastarng 1.3, it fail.
Try:
ultrastarng /usr/share/games/ultrastar-ng/songs

If not open files:
chmod ga+rx -R /usr/share/games/ultrastar-ng/songs
