The workaround with adding a subdirectory with the username worked for me as well, but there is another method that works too: After adding the line
tmpfs /media tmpfs defaults 0 0
to /etc/fstab and rebooting (or 'sudo mount -a'), the user directory below /media is automaticalliy created and USB sticks etc. are properly mounted.
