I've got rid of the problem by adding acpi=off to /etc/defaults/grub.
i.e.
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=off"

The downside is that I'm left with only a command prompt and no Unity netbook shell.
There's probably a better solution somewhere.
