Whoops, "sr0", not "sda". Fixed command:

sudo strace -vv -s 1024 -f -o /tmp/cdrom_id.trace /lib/udev/cdrom_id --debug --export /dev/sr0

(this is all one line, by the way; Launchpad breaks it into two)
