So it would be great if you could do another test to see whether the problem is in the kernel or in user space: can you please install the jaunty kernel again from

  http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux/linux-image-2.6.28-15-generic_2.6.28-15.52_amd64.deb

(clicking will invoke gdebi, which should work) and select that in the grub menu? (Press shift during boot to get the menu, it's hidden by default). If you run karmic under the jaunty kernel, do you still get the bug?
