I don't know if this is of any interest. I upgraded from ubuntu gutsy gibbon to hardy heron and this problem occurred. Booting with the previous kernel (2.6.22) and forcedeth driver 0.60 everything works. In 0.61, the MAC-address is in fact read backwards. This is the upgraded entry in the 70-persistent-net.rules;

# Converted from /etc/iftab on upgrade
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:13:8f:e9:da:e5", ATTRS{type}=="1", NAME="eth0"

I solved it by replacing it with;
# PCI device 0x10de:0x03ef (forcedeth)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ID=="0000:00:07.0", NAME="eth0"

and to get the correct MAC-address instead of the random one; /etc/network/interfaces
iface eth0 inet dhcp
        hwaddress ether 00:13:8f:e9:da:e5
