From a terminal, I just performed a sudo apt-get update and then a sudo apt-get upgrade. There were quite a few updates available. After the upgrade completed, I performed a sudo apt-get shutdown -r now from a terminal window. Once I logged back in, I now have a functioning battery indicator.
