Jumping into the discussion, why not just install it on first sync?
Step one: plug in Palm.
Step two: device-kit or jockey (I'm not sure, but whatever software - similar to codec-install) says "Hey! I can use this but you have to click "Ok" to install some software first!"
Step three: user clicks okay.
Step four: Profit! (and the user can now do everything they could before)
Also, when phone-sync-ng or what its called is actually written, it can plug into the same base.
