Perhaps the switch to itstool broke the translations. We needed to do that at some point to match upstream gnome-user-docs and it does give the translators a bit more context.
Oneiric's Ubuntu Desktop Guide is mostly the same as GNOME's help and largely the same as Natty's (a big change from Natty is the switch to GNOME 3, especially the System Settings overhaul), so translators can reference those to speed up the work.
