Your thoughts are well understood, DrC.

I suppose one possibility would be to make Google Earth available in the Canonical Partners repository in the same way as e.g. Skype. That way users would be able to install it through the Ubuntu Software Centre. Don't know the prerequisites for doing that, though.

@Steve: Is this possibly something you have considered?
