Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-artwork

The default theme uses a lot of spacing and large buttons, which makes it very difficult to use on small screens, e.g. 1280x800 or even 1024x768.

It would be very helpful to have a compact theme available that uses small spacings. I have created a modification of clearlooks theme that does exactly that, you can see a visual comparison here: http://martin.ankerl.com/2007/11/04/clearlooks-compact-gnome-theme/

Any news on that? It's a good idea - would be nice to include something like that somehow.

Here is an Ubuntu Compact theme, based on Ubuntu 8.04:

Come on, is nobody feeling responsible for this? How can I get things moving? I am willing to work on this if somebody tells me what needs to be done.

Well, I think you could definitely call this waste of space a bug. Never liked it. Would be great to include this as a choice, just for people that do not search in google on their own.

Really, some applications waste a lot of space in toolbars, menubars, etc. Being really uncomfortable for small laptops.

This is specially relevant in multimedia applications, like Totem. Such applications should have more space for the multimedia content and less for the toolbars.
