On a G4, this worked:

  apt-get purge ubiquity-slideshow-lubuntu

and then the installation ran to completion with a small "copying files..." and "installing system" and such progress dialogs instead of the slideshow.

This is something that has to be worked on using real hardware. Strangely, the same installation image worked without modification in a virtual machine in Qemu.
