Comment 6 for bug 945085

As I had just installed the 11.10 using the same USB stick with success, instead of getting another stick I just reloaded the most recent 12.04 installer image made a startup disk and what do you know: the problem(s) are gone now - not sure what has changed, but this bug can be closed.
