Binary package hint: ubiquity

While trying to install Ubuntu on a 186GB USB 2.0 drive (sdb), the installer crashes when trying to automatically partition the disk. I have also tried partitioning in Windows using Partition Magic and partitioning manually in the Ubuntu setup to select the partitions and it works fine until it goes to install the boot loader, then crashes. The attached reports are after an Installer Crash with GParted doing the automatic partitioning during a install:
